WASHINGTON, D.C. -

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Hyundai and Kia both announced vehicle recalls in states where snow and ice — and materials used to treat highways in those places — are common.

The largest campaign covers 79,867 units as Kia is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2012 Kia Sedona vehicles manufactured from June 15, 2005, through Aug. 14, 2012.

These units were originally sold in, or currently registered in Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia or the District of Columbia.

In the affected vehicles, NHTSA explained the front lower control arms may break due to corrosion resulting from prolonged exposure to salty environments.

“A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the agency said.

Kia told NHTSA it will notify owners and franchised dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms, and will either rustproof or replace them, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin next month.

In the meantime, owners may contact Kia at (800) 333-4542 and reference recall No. SC100.

And from sister automaker Hyundai, NHTSA indicated the company is recalling certain model year 2007 and 2008 Hyundai Entourage vehicles manufactured from February 16, 2006, through June 30, 2008. All 15,500 units were sold in or currently registered in the same cold-weather areas as the Kia campaign.

Like the affected Kia vehicles, NHTSA said the front lower control arms of these recall Hyundais may fracture due to corrosion resulting from exposure to road salt and water.

“A fractured control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” the agency reiterated.

Hyundai informed NHTSA that will notify owners and franchised dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion of the front lower control arms, and will either rustproof or replace them, free of charge. The recall also is expected to begin next month.

Owners may contact Hyundai at (800) 633-5151 or by email at consumeraffairs@hmausa.com. Hyundai’s recall number is 115.

Ford Recalling Focus Electric Models

NHTSA also said Ford is recalling certain model year 2012 through 2014 Focus Electric vehicles manufactured Sept. 15, 2011 through Aug. 23 of this year. In the affected vehicles — a total of 2,456 units — regulators indicated a powertrain control module software problem may result in a stall-like condition.

“An unexpected loss of power while driving increases the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said.

Ford told the agency that it will notify owners and franchised dealers will reprogram the power control module, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin before the end of this month.

Owners may contact the Ford Customer Relationship Center at (866) 436-7332 and reference recall campaign No. 13S09.
