WASHINGTON, D.C. -

This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Ford’s voluntary recall of more than 25,000 trucks, vans and SUVs to rectify a brake-light problem.

The specific models included in this recall are:

—Ford E-250 from the 2002 to 2007 model years.
—Ford E-350 from the 2002 to 2007 model years.
—Ford E-450 from the 2002 to 2007 model years.
—Ford E-550 from the 2002 to 2007 model years.
—Ford Excursion from the 2002 to 2005 model years.
—Ford Ranger from the 2004 to 2011 model years.

NHTSA officials indicated this recall includes a total of 26,715 units.

They believe the recall stems from units manufactured at Ford’s Twin Cities Assembly Plant and service parts distributed to franchise dealers that fail to comply with requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 titled, “Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment.”

NHTSA explained the multi-function switch was shipped with a subcomponent slider that may experience deformation. The agency thinks a multi-function switch with a deformed slider may malfunction causing the turn signal, tail lights, hazard warning signal flashers and/or brake lights not to activate while increasing the risk of a crash.

Officials said franchise dealers will replace the switch on recall vehicles for free. NHTSA indicated Ford plans to begin this process on Aug. 15.
