TORRANCE, Calif., and WASHINGTON, D.C. -

A pair of Japanese automakers announced separate recalls recently — campaigns that cover more than 160,000 units.

The larger of the two recalls was issued by Nissan North America, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The OEM is recalling 123,308 Altima sedans from the 2013 model year. These vehicles were manufactured between March 21 of last year and March 26 of this year.

NHTSA indicated that Nissan is conducting the recall for these Altimas because the spare tires may have been significantly over- or under-inflated.

“Tires that are significantly over- or under-inflated may fail without warning, increasing the risk of a crash,” agency officials said.

Nissan told NHTSA it will notify owners, and franchised dealers will inspect and adjust the spare tire pressure, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin May 3.

In the meantime, owners can contact Nissan at (800) 647-7261.

Honda Recalls 20122013 Fit Sport

American Honda announced it will voluntarily recall 43,782 model-year 2012–2013 Fit Sport vehicles in the United States to update the vehicle stability assist (VSA) system software. The automaker indicated the update will be done free of charge.

OEM officials explained the VSA system on certain 2012-2013 model year Honda Fit Sport vehicles equipped with certain tires may allow yaw rates that exceed certain U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) requirements. They mentioned this issue was discovered during FMVSS compliance testing.

“Honda is not aware of any related crashes or injuries,” the automaker said.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of all affected vehicles to take their vehicles to an authorized franchised dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda.

Officials noted mailed notification to customers will begin next month.

In addition to contacting customers by mail, at that time, owners of these vehicles can determine if their vehicles require repair by going to www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (800) 999-1009, and selecting option No. 4.
