MARKHAM, Ontario -

Automakers in Canada appear to be closing 2011 with a bang on the certified pre-owned front, as all the companies that reported November results to Auto Remarketing Canada posted year-over-year gains for monthly sales.

In fact, one particular brand — Acura — even achieved its best-ever month for CPO sales, and two other brands told Auto Remarketing Canada they marked their strongest Novembers on record.

Starting off with Acura, its November CPO sales of 307 vehicles were up from 234 certified sales a year ago. Through November, there have been 2,554 Acura CPO sales, compared to 1,945 sales in the first 11 months of 2010.

Acura’s October certified sales were 248 units, versus 198 sold in October 2010.

The Honda brand moved 1,598 certified units in November, roughly even with the 1,577 CPO cars it sold last year. Year-to-date, it has sold 18,044 CPO vehicles, compared to 18,495 units in the same period of 2010. During October, Honda moved 1,586 CPO units, down from 1,633 in October 2010.

Todd Fowler, the manager of used vehicle operations at Honda Canada, had this to say about the company’s CPO performance last month: “We are pleased that our Honda dealers have maintained their certified used-vehicle sales in November with a tight supply of some key models while our Acura dealers achieved their highest CPO sales month ever.”

Meanwhile, Toyota Canada and Mercedes-Benz Canada both called last month their best-ever November.

Toyota moved 2,078 CPO units, compared to 1,787 in the year-ago period. Mercedes-Benz Canada moved 964 pre-owned units last month (up 14.1 percent), pushing year-to-date volume to 12,195 units (up 25.8 percent).

A month earlier, Mercedes-Benz Canada hit its best October on record for pre-owned, as it moved 1,245 vehicles, a 43.3-percent gain. For Mercedes-Benz Canada, pre-owned figures include both certified and non-CPO.

Moving along, Volvo Cars of Canada sold 109 certified vehicles during November, up 67.7 percent year-over-year. Since the program’s re-launch in April, the company has moved 1,007 certified vehicles, compared to 521 in the same eight-month period of 2010.

During October, Volvo sold 106 CPO cars, up from 54 in October 2010.

“Since its re-launch in April, Volvo’s CPO program proves to be an excellent choice for people in search of reliable, high quality vehicles,” stated Emanuel Lichtinshtein, national fleet sales, CPO & remarketing manager for Volvo Cars of Canada. “Our comprehensive inspections and warranty offering provides peace-of-mind to customers looking for worry-free ownership of a premium luxury vehicle.”

Over at Audi Canada, dealers increased their CPO sales by 14.7 percent year-over-year with 358 units moved during November. The brand has already achieved its best year ever with 3,830 CPO units sold and is up 19.9 percent from the same period of 2010.

There was a 9-percent dip in sales during October (332 CPO units sold), which was due in part to a “very strong” October 2010, according to Jonathan Breton, manager of certified pre-owned and corporate sales at Audi Canada.

“Our dealers continue to be more engaged than ever in the certified pre-owned business, not only proven by their sales performance, but also investments into resources in their dealerships to support pre-owned sales,” he noted.

“On the sales floor, the Q7 remains an increasingly popular vehicle with the winter season with us in many parts of the country, and some dealers are finding new ways to source good inventory of all models despite a lean supply of vehicles,” Breton continued.

Volkswagen Canada achieved CPO sales of 939 units in November, compared to 824 in the year-ago period. Its year-to-date tally has reached 10,630 units, up from 10,401 CPO sales through November 2010.

In October, VW posted 1,031 certified sales, versus 968 the prior year.

“Volkswagen Canada is pleased with the steady improvement we have shown over 2010 and expects a strong close to the year,” said Thomas Tetzlaff, manager of media relations for VW Canada.

At BMW Group Canada, the BMW brand moved 1,057 CPO units (up 3.5 percent), and its year-to-date sum is at 12,161 sales (up 3.8 percent).

The Mini brand moved 121 certified vehicles in November (up 47.6 percent) and through 11 months, it has reached 1,884 CPO sales (up 47 percent).

BMW sold 1,296 CPO vehicles in October (up 3.3 percent), and Mini sold 172 (up 67 percent).

Reporting October CPO sales, Subaru Canada moved 35 certified units that month, compared to 23 in October 2010. Year-to-date, the automaker was at 301 CPO sales through October, down from 318 in the year-ago period.
