When multiple, separate entities independently develop and implement technologies, siloes can happen.
As artificial intelligence and other tech innovations grow, a new initiative in the auto industry is looking to help make sure that doesn’t happen by focusing on “developing shared standards to help AI platforms and automotive systems work together across vehicle shopping, service and ownership.”
Open Auto, which aims to unite automakers, dealers, tech providers, AI platforms and other automotive stakeholders, launched last week with the goal of crafting “develop shared standards for how AI agents and automotive systems discover capabilities, exchange information and complete authorized actions,” it said in a news release.
The widespread growth of automotive and tech companies building AI platforms independently can create, “one-off integrations, incompatible data structures and closed workflows,” the organization said.
“Open Auto is developing a shared foundation that allows companies to build its own differentiated products and customer experiences while connecting through common standards,” it added.
The initial focus will be on interoperability standards, trust and behavioral principals for areas like identity, consent and permissions, and open reference implementations to show how those might work in automotive.

Nick Haywood is the group’s CEO.
“AI is quickly changing how consumers shop for, service and interact with their vehicles, but without a common foundation, we risk creating even more fragmentation across an already complex industry,” Haywood said.
“Open Auto is about bringing the automotive and technology communities together now to establish shared standards that allow innovation to move faster while keeping businesses in control of their products, data and customer relationships.”
The group has opened participation to automakers, dealers, automotive technology providers, AI platforms, lenders, insurers, marketplaces, data providers and other industry stakeholders. Those interested can request an Open Auto briefing here.
