TORRANCE, Calif. -

Siri — not just a tool for the iPhone. Siri Eyes Free, a voice-activated program, is now available as a dealer-installed accessory in select Honda and Acura vehicles.

American Honda Motor Co. revealed Tuesday that select Honda and Acura models, including the 2013-2014 Honda Accord and 2013 Acura RDX and ILX, now offer buyers Apple’s Siri Eyes Free mode as a dealer-installed accessory.

Using voice commands, buyers can send and read text messages and emails, set up calendar entries, reminders and emails, check the weather, used turn-by-turn navigation and more.

Not surprisingly, this news could be used as a significant selling point for Honda and Acura dealers.

"Honda recognizes the power of Siri Eyes Free to meet connectivity and convenience needs of its customers in a responsible manner," said Art St. Cyr, vice president of product planning and logistics, American Honda. "With technology becoming further integrated into people's lives, we are happy to provide next-generation connectivity and meet our customer's ever-changing needs."

Customers can visit a Honda or Acura dealership to purchase and install Siri Eyes Free integration, Honda explained.

How does it work?

The company explained by reengineering the software in select vehicles (through the HondaLink or AcuraLink connected car systems), Siri works with HandsFreeLink via the onboard microphone and speakers.
