SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Since gas prices haven't rocketed back up to mid-2008 levels, TrueCar.com analysts have noticed demand for SUVs is as strong as ever.

The July edition of the TrueTrends by TrueCar Report shows that 2010 SUVs are the fastest-selling category of vehicles. Analysts pinpointed luxury and midsize SUV segments, specifically, as being discounted less than the market average.

However, they also found some incentive packages on SUVs totaling up to a 20-percent reduction off of MSRP.

"The sport utility vehicle is making a strong comeback as shoppers return to the marketplace in search of stylish vehicles that offer better gas mileage but don't sacrifice utility," TrueCar.com emphasized late last week.

To back up the claims further, the site determined nine of the top 10 vehicles with the fewest days in inventory are 2010 model year SUVs. Leading the way is the Lexus LX 570, which is only on lots for an average 12 days. Other notable units included the GMC Terrain (14 days), Chevrolet Equinox (14 days), Toyota Highlander (15 days) and the Audi Q7 (15 days).

"The recent uptick in demand for SUVs indicates that consumers have become immune to increasing gas prices and are willing to pay more for the comfort and space, despite the fragile economy," explained Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry, trends and insights for TrueCar.com.

"The love affair with SUVs isn't over yet; consumers just prefer they burn a little less gas and look pretty," Toprak added.

While SUVs attracted much analyst attention, TrueCar.com also found several other 2010 vehicles associated with generous incentives. Topping the list is the 22-percent discount available for the Chevrolet Silverado 1500.

While the Silverado discount paced the large truck segment for July, TrueCar.com found 14 discounts for other vehicle segments that came in at 10 percent and higher. That group of 2010 models included:

—Midsize SUV: Jeep Grand Cherokee, 20 percent

—Midsize Car: Hyundai Sonata, 18 percent

—Small Truck: Ford Ranger, 17 percent

—Large Car: Mercury Grand Marquis, 16 percent

—Small Car: Ford Focus, 15 percent

—Large SUV: Chevrolet Tahoe, 14 percent

—Luxury SUV: Lincoln MKX, 14 percent

—Sport Car: Ford Mustang, 14 percent

—Minivan: Kia Sedona, 13 percent

—Luxury Sport Car: Chevrolet Corvette, 13 percent

—Small SUV: Jeep Patriot, 12 percent

—Luxury Car: Lincoln MKZ, 11 percent

—Subcompact Car: Toyota Yaris, 11 percent

—Van: Ford Transit Connect, 10 percent

Turning to another regular feature in the TrueTrends Report, TrueCar.com analysts highlighted which vehicles have the best Price Flex Score, a composite reading of total incentives, greatest percentage below MSRP, greatest price drops and days in inventory. They reiterated that the score measures how elastic the transaction price is for a particular model. A high Flex Score means a possibility of a great swing (high or low) in the price from MSRP.

Yet again, the Honda Insight had a score of 100, according the site. Analysts gave this model the same reading a month ago, too.

Coming in right behind with scores of 99 were Mitsubishi Endeavor, Mazda's MAZDA5 and Toyota Yaris. Two Nissan units, the Titan and Altima, posted high readings as well, at 98 and 97, respectively.

Taking a brief look at how 2011 models are performing, TrueCar.com spotted a sharp rise in how much BMW is capturing its monthly sales through the brand's 2011 models since the 3, 5 and 7 Series, M3, X5, X6 and Z4 are all available.

Analysts placed the nameplate's total in June at 47.7 percent, but they increased it to 67 percent for July.

TrueCar.com wrapped up its report by mentioning that July 28 will be the day for the industry's high-water mark of consumer incentives. TrueCar.com thinks that day will involve a 12.5-percent discount off of MSRP.

"This is the last Wednesday of the month and leads to a solid weekend with possible discounts high through the weekend and into the first half of August," analysts concluded.
