What prompted/inspired you to join the auto industry and what do you enjoy most about it?
In 1997, a childhood friend prompted me to apply for a customer service position at Manheim Utah’s Auto Auction. Two days after I started, I experienced my first auction and I was hooked. I loved that each week’s preparations were similar but that each week brought new challenges, vehicles, and excitement.
Over the years through different auction positions and moving into remarketing roles, I still enjoy the excitement of an auction each week the most.
What is the top trend you’re watching in the used-car industry this year?
I have always been fascinated by how the remarketing of used cars, and the automotive industry responds to current events and plays a role in the consumer retention of a vehicle. With consumers trending to keep vehicles longer, monitoring the average age of used cars entering the market plays a role in making reconditioning and pricing decisions.
What accomplishment are you most proud of in your career?
In 2001, I accepted a commercial manager position at the auction and quickly learned I would be managing an additional team and developing processes and facilitation of 5,500 General Motord vehicles for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The main strategy and goal were to make sure all vehicles were prepared, distributed, and lastly secured for remarketing at the end of the games without misplacing any vehicles. I am happy to report that all vehicles were accounted for at the end of the project.
What book, film or song has inspired you personally or professionally?
I cannot recall just one book or film but a collaboration of various World War II books and films that inspired me. After reading “The Diary of Anne Frank” anything about World War II sparked my interest because my grandfather was drafted in the war and rarely spoke about it. What inspired me was the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things or just enduring hard things. Personally, and professionally those stories have always reminded me that I too can-do hard things.
Who is someone who has inspired you personally or professionally?
I do not have just one person but a set of parents that have always inspired and guided me both personally and professionally in life. They have always been examples of how to work hard, have great work ethics, being dependable and fulfilling their commitments. Both parents have been a part of every decision I have made personally or professionally by guiding me, not telling me. Throughout my career I have tried to use that same philosophy, although not always easy, especially in my younger years, but they are my inspiration by their example.
