2015 CPO Dealer of the Year is …

BILL LUKE

Auto Remarketing has revealed its 2015 CPO Dealer of the Year, presented by NCM Associates, and taking home the award, now in its sixth year, is Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram.

The Phoenix dealership was the automaker’s top certified pre-owned seller in both 2013 and 2014, and it holds the No. 1 spot through three quarters of 2015, as well.

Led by Don Luke — the president and chief executive officer of Bill Luke Dealerships — the store sold 1,771 CPO units in 2014, after moving 1,520 CPO vehicles the year before.

The dealership has posted 1,577 certified sales year-to-date through September, putting it at the top spot yet again.

“Congratulations to Don Luke and his team at Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram. They have consistently ranked at the top of Chrysler’s CPO sales leaders, and we’re honored to have them join us at the CPO Forum and Used Car Week,” said Auto Remarketing publisher and Used Car Week chair Bill Zadeits.

“We look forward to hearing Don share his CPO and used-car strategies at Used Car Week and applaud their CPO leadership,” Zadeits added.  “Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram join a legacy of outstanding dealerships to have won this award, including Hyundai of New Port Richey (Fla.), Galpin Ford (Calif.), Paragon Honda/Acura (N.Y.), Karl Chevrolet (Iowa) and  Longo Toyota (Calif.).”

Don Luke and the dealership will be presented the award at 4:05 p.m. on Nov. 16 during the CPO Forum, which is one of four industry-leading conferences making up Used Car Week in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Trevor Robinson — director of detail solutions, training & development at NCM Associates — will present the award.

NCM president and CEO Paul Faletti Jr. offered his congratulations to the dealership.

“Congratulations to Bill Luke Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram for receiving the 2015 CPO Dealer of the Year Award. As the automaker’s top-selling certified pre-owned dealer in 2013 and 2014, and leading the pack again through three quarters of 2015, this is a well-placed honor,” Faletti said. “Thanks for continuing to set the pace in CPO!”

Luke will also be among the panelists for the “Top 10 Best CPO Ideas” discussion taking place at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 17 during the CPO Forum.

And at the National Remarketing Conference portion of Used Car Week, Luke will participate on “The National Panel: Opportunities and Hurdles Facing the American Used Car Industry in 2016.” That panel is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on Nov. 19.

“On behalf of all of us at FCA, I want to congratulate Don and his entire team on receiving this award,” said Eric Swanson, who heads up certified pre-owned at FCA US. “This dealership demonstrates leadership, dedication to doing things the right way and a passion to sell certified every single day.

“This level of success isn’t easy to achieve — Don and his team just make it seem that way, and I’m proud to see them get recognized for the outstanding work they do!”

Del Mar & VTS partner to enhance compliance

partnership puzzle

Re3 Conference sponsor Del Mar Recovery Solutions recently partnered with Vendor Transparency Solutions in another step to enhance its compliance management systems.

Executive explained this move will increase Del Mar’s level of compliance and quality of services it provides to the lending and financial services community. This partnership is geared to provide a series of online, ongoing sets of vetted industry training courses that are specific to service providers in the repossession industry.

The companies highlighted the combination of Del Mar’s progressive compliance initiatives and VTS’ new formal online tracking tools will allow Del Mar’s compliance team and its clients the confirmation that all personnel has been trained in accordance with industry standards and best practices.

With requirements from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau being such an important asset for both finance companies and service providers, Del Mar Recovery Solutions president and chief executive officer Joshua Elias emphasized the company has positioned itself to continue to be one of the leader in the recovery industry.

Elias added this newly formed partnership will now allow ease of access for Del Mar’s current and future lender client base of license, insurance, contracts, training and all due diligence as required by CFPB.

“Providing our clients the extended comfort that the Del Mar executive team takes compliance and training very seriously makes this partnership an easy decision. VTS has done a wonderful job paving the way for service providers to have a visible and efficient way to train its employees in the repossession industry,” said Elias, one of the executives included the inaugural Remarketing & Used-Car Industry’s 40 Under 40 who will be honored during Used Car Week next month in Scottsdale, Ariz.

“We have worked diligently over the course of the past 5 years creating a program that both serves as a sounding board to our clients and vendors, but also as a leader meeting the new demands of the new requirements being passed down by the regulators,” Elias continued.

“We will continue to partner with leaders in our industry, like VTS, to ensure our compliance programs stay ahead of the curve,” Elias went on to say.

Partnership like this one will be just part of the discussion that’s on tap for the Re3 Conference, which unfolds at the midpoint of Used Car Week. The Re3 Conference delves into a wide array of compliance and other matters associated with the repossession, recovery and remarketing of vehicles.

It’s all set for Nov. 18 at the Phoenician in Scottsdale, Ariz. The deadline for an early bird registration discount is Oct. 15. More details are available at www.usedcarweek.biz.

“There is no question that the topic of compliance has taken center stage and needs to be the primary focus of lending institutions and their service providers,” said Max Pineiro, president of Vendor Transparency Solutions.

Pineiro then cheered the moves made by Del Mar Recovery Solutions.

“The attention that is being placed on compliance and risk management by Del Mar is a clear indication of their intention to mitigate risk for their client base,” Pineiro said. “VTS is looking forward to working with the staff at Del Mar Recovery Solutions through comprehensive compliance monitoring and continuing education training.”

Used Car Week sneak peek webinars continue with financing focus

UCWSneakPeak for AR

Still on the fence about whether to attend the SubPrime Forum and other parts of Used Car Week? Well straight ahead is a free preview of how the financing dialogues and presentations will unfold with one of leading experts who will be getting the SubPrime Forum started.

The next Used Car Week sneak peek webinar hosted by Paul Potratz, chief operating officer of Potratz Advertising, will include Melinda Zabritski, senior director at Experian Automotive. Finance companies executives and dealers can catch the online conversation with one of the keynote speakers for the SubPrime Forum coming up at 3 p.m. ET on Oct. 1 by registering for the session here.

Zabritski has been one of the experts annually at the SubPrime Forum, which is orchestrated in partnership with the National Automotive Finance Association.

Potratz already hosted one of these Used Car Week sneak peek webinars. The first installment featured Joe Derkos, director of the Power Information Network, a division of J.D. Power and Associates. Derkos discussed a wide array of topics during this segment, covering the impact of Federal Reserve decisions to how the expectation of around an 800,000-unit increase in lease maturity volume likely will feed nicely into dealer lots as certified pre-owned units.

Catch the rest of Derkos' thoughts on the certified market during his address at the CPO Forum during Used Car Week.

Potratz has one more Used Car Week sneak peek webinar on his calendar. That final session will include Jonathan Banks of NADA Used Car Guide, who will be presenting both at the CPO Forum as well as the National Remarketing Conference. Banks and Potratz will team up for a conversation on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. ET. Register here for that event.

Used Car Week runs from Nov. 16-20 at the Phoenician in Scottsdale, Ariz. And early bird registration discount expires on Oct. 15.

NRC/NAAA just 1 year away

767A2459

A new era for how the wholesale industry will gather annually for its largest event is just a year away from dawning.

The National Auto Auction Association is gathering for its annual convention this week in Orlando, Fla. But next year, the event will be a part of the National Remarketing Conference during Used Car Week at the Red Rock Casino & Resort in Las Vegas.

The team at Cherokee Media Group (which publishes Auto Remarketing) orchestrates Used Car Week, which includes not only the National Remarketing Conference, but also the CPO Forum, the SubPrime Forum and the Re3 Conference.

They will be on-site at the NAAA Convention this week in exhibit hall booths 205 and 207. Stop by to learn more about next year's event — and meet baseball legend Lou Piniella during the opening reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

“It’s amazing to consider that in a little more than 12 months from now all of the great elements of the NAAA’s annual convention will be combining with the NRC to form an event that’s aimed to benefit all players in the wholesale space,” Cherokee Media Group president and Used Car Week chairman Bill Zadeits said.

“The addition of NAAA’s convention to Used Car Week is a natural fit for everyone concerned and allows industry professionals to concentrate their networking,” Zadeits continued.

“Our team not only is doing a great job of organizing this year’s NRC coming up in November, but also looking ahead at how to plan for NRC/NAAA 2016 to make it not only meet but exceed the industry’s expectations,” he went on to say.

The meeting will be known as the National Remarketing Conference and National Auto Auction Association Convention and will be held each year during Used Car Week.

Getting both organizations to this point in the process has taken more than a year.

Dave Angelicchio, a past NAAA president who spearheaded the effort for a combined meeting, said when the combined conferences were announced last year: “I am extremely pleased that we have reached agreement to combine our conferences beginning in 2016.”

He went on to say that one of the many benefits to be realized will be when people can make one conference trip instead of two.

Another former NAAA president, Jack Neshe, also expressed support when the deal was announced in 2014, noting that the combination of the two meetings could not be accomplished until 2016 because of existing hotel contracts.

One registration fee will be used for the NRC/NAAA, said Frank Hackett, NAAA’s chief executive officer.

He said when the combined conferences were announced that some professionals who normally attend a NAAA convention but not the NRC will now be able to network with other industry professionals, and the same is true in reverse, as there are some people who traditionally attend NRC but not NAAA. “This will be a great value to everyone involved,” he said at the time.

Ron Smith, chairman emeritus of Cherokee Media Group, said the relationship with NAAA further enhances the value and importance of Used Car Week.

“The vision we’ve always had for UCW was that professionals from different segments of the industry can meet over a one week period to get to know each other better and find common areas where it is beneficial for them to work together,” Smith said.

Used Car Week: More sponsors & launch of sneak peek webinar

With just nine weeks to go until this year’s conference series kicks off, Used Car Week continues to build momentum.

Among those recently coming aboard:

CPO Forum
Experian
Nissan
Infiniti

Re3 Confrence
MBSi Capital Corp.

Used Car Week
Fleet Financial

And speaking of the sneak peek webinar series, a leader with one of those sponsoring companies, Melinda Zabritski of Experian, will be previewing her SubPrime Forum opening keynote address during the next webinar, which is scheduled for Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. EST.

Remarketing & Used-Car Industry’s 40 Under 40

767A2731

I pressed “send” on the email to notify recipients of the inaugural “Remarketing & Used-Car Industry’s 40 Under 40.”

It wasn’t even five minutes later that I got the first response back. Then another. And another, and another.

It went on like that for a while.

As a magazine editor, this was awesome; folks in my line of work love quick responses.

But that wasn’t the best part. See, it wasn’t that people responded, it was how they responded to earning 40 Under 40 recognition.

Just a few examples:

“Wow! Thank you!”
“This is quite an honor, and I’ll be honest, I’m shocked.”
“ … wow this is amazing, thank you!”
“Thank you for such great news!

It was extremely humbling to hear such positive response from our 40 Under 40 recipients, especially after learning all the great things these folks are doing in this business and within their communities.

It’s touching to know that this award is meaningful and impactful to some of the very people who are making a significant impact in the industry.

And at such young ages, I might add.

As a 32-year-old myself, I’m right at the midpoint of the age range for our honorees. Being a part of this same generation, I can appreciate the broader economic, political and cultural environment in which our honorees grew up, went to school and eventually made their way in the workforce.

That makes this whole project even more rewarding.

And inspiring. If I ever need a swift kick of motivation, reading these people’s stories certainly provides that to a 30-something like me.

Speaking of inspiring, it was also heartening to see how many people nominated their peers.

Unfortunately, the very nature of this project doesn’t allow us to pick all the nominees, although many are equally impressive in their own right.

But good news: this is just the first edition. This industry is full of people under 40 (and under 30, for that matter) who are making waves, and this project is going to allow us to recognize many different folks year after year. Congratulations to all the honorees, nominees and the great companies you represent. And thank you for making this project rewarding!

And now, without further ado, is the inaugural Remarketing and Used-Car Industry's 40 Under 40:

11 used cars that may be strong sells for college students

2012_Impreza4Door_002

If you’re a dealer in college town or a city with a good number of folks ready to head  off to school, you may want to pay attention to the latest used-car list from Edmunds.com.

The site has pinpointed what it considers to be the 11 best used cars and SUVs for college students, based on their unique needs — and this listing  may also prove to be a solid selling point on your lot.

Among the attributes of rides in this group are the following, as listed by Edmunds: modern electronic features, distinctive style, versatile cargo area, good crash rating and low cost of ownership.

"When you look at the list, you will notice that that we left out sensible used car choices like the Honda Civic, Toyota RAV4 or Ford Fusion," said James Riswick, used car editor for Edmunds.com. "While these are all great options, they are generic enough to appeal to anyone, and we wanted to craft a list specifically based on what matters most to today's students."

Below are the Top 11 Used Cars for College Students:

Mazda 3 (2004-'09): $4,000-$15,000

Honda CR-V (2002-'06): $4,900-$13,000

Scion tC (2005-'10): $5,000-$15,000

Acura TSX (2004-'08): $6,500-$15,500

Ford Mustang (2005-'09): $7,000-$30,000

Toyota Prius (2006-'09): $7,000-$15,000

Kia Soul (2010-'13): $8,000-$17,000

Honda Fit (2009-'13): $8,500-$18,000

Hyundai Tucson (2010-'15): $11,000-$26,000

Toyota FJ Cruiser (2007-'11): $11,500-$28,000

Subaru Impreza (2012-'15): $12,900-$26,000

More information about this list can be found in this analysis from Riswick on the Edmunds site
