Buick ranked as the top mainstream brand and Jaguar won in the premium brand category as future vehicle value forecaster ALG named the winners of the 2021 Pre-Owned Value Awards, or POVAs.
ALG, which is the analytics subsidiary of TrueCar Inc., awarded its 2021 POVAs to vehicles with the lowest forecast depreciation from two to five years of age, during the period of 2020 to 2023.
ALG chief industry analyst Eric Lyman said Buick and Jaguar provide the best of both worlds to consumers. He said that includes luxury and quality along with the value and peace of mind of certified pre-owned program benefits.
“This combination has propelled Buick and Jaguar to the No. 1 brand spots in their respective categories for this year’s Pre-Owned Value Awards,” Lyman said in a news release.
ALG introduced the Micro Utility category for the first time with this year’s awards, and the Jeep Renegade took top honors.
For the awards, ALG bases vehicle segmentation on ALG’s proprietary automotive segmentation. That takes into account information such as vehicle size, transaction price, and cross-shop information.
The awards mark Buick’s first time winning in the overall mainstream brand category. Jaguar wins the premium brand category for the first time, as well.
ALG determines award winners through analysis of used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness. To be eligible for a brand award, a manufacturer must have vehicle entries in at least four different segments. To account for differences across trim levels, model averages are weighted based on percentage share relative to the entire model line.
“About half of consumers trade in their existing vehicle when they’re buying their next car and use that trade-in value toward the purchase of their next car,” Lyman said.
Lyman continued, “As consumers begin their vehicle selection process, ALG’s Pre-Owned Value Awards are a great resource in helping consumers identify the used vehicles that best hold their value and get the most bang for the buck upon resale.”

Grené Baranco explained why her recognition from Ally Financial and the National Association of Minority Automobile Dealers (NAMAD) sends “an important message.”
On Tuesday, Ally and NAMAD joined forces to name Baranco, who is the new and used sales manager of Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead, as the recipient of the third annual “Ally Sees Her” award in recognition of her automotive leadership and commitment to community and diversity.
In conjunction with the award, Ally is donating $10,000 to Meals on Wheels Atlanta in Baranco’s honor.
“A lot of women, younger than me, have not been able to see themselves in this industry,” Baranco said in a news release distributed by Ally.
“This award is really about telling women of color that their contributions are valued,” she continued. “It recognizes me and what I represent, an African American woman having a successful career in retail automotive. This is also an important message for our industry as we seek new leadership and talent in areas that may not have traditionally seemed available to some.”
Ally recapped that it developed the “Ally Sees Her” award with NAMAD three years ago to recognize the next generation of promising minority women leaders in auto retail who also are highly involved in their communities. The award was inspired by the Association of National Advertisers #SeeHer campaign to elevate women in media and marketing.
Previous winners include Amber Martin, who leads business and community partnerships for the Martin Management Group in Bowling Green, Ky., and Karmala Sutton, who in 2018 was the dealer in training at Honda of Kenosha in Bristol, Wisc.
“The award is our way of lifting women of color by spotlighting a leader who is making a difference in her community and at her dealership. We want to showcase leaders like Grené, who inspire other women,” Ally senior director of corporate citizenship Jacqueline Howard said in the news release.
“Grené has kept her eye on innovations throughout her career, implementing one of the first-ever auto Internet sales departments in the country in 1997,” Howard continued. “She’s dedicated to continually improving the industry while also forging a path for the women who follow her.”
Baranco, whose parents — Greg and Juanita Baranco — bought the Buckhead dealership in 2003, serves on several boards in Atlanta, including Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Common Cause Georgia, the Georgia State University Department of Religious Studies Alumni Board and The Arts Xchange.
In response to Ally’s donation to Meals on Wheels Atlanta on her behalf, Baranco said the nonprofit is special to her because it provides nourishment for the community’s “body and soul” as recipients benefit from the volunteer visits as much as the food they bring.
“The relationships they build during the visits are equally as important as the meals they serve,” she said.
Baranco began her auto career in 1997 at her family’s Pontiac GMC dealership in Lilburn, Ga., where she created the internet sales department. She also has managed internet sales at Infiniti of Beverly Hills and at Mercedes-Benz of Buckhead and served as general manager for the Baranco family’s Smart dealership franchise.
Baranco is a graduate of Georgia State University and the National Automobile Dealers Association Dealer Academy.
“Grené is the true example of being a leader, innovator, and trailblazer in the auto industry,” NAMAD president Damon Lester said.
Baranco was to receive her award during a virtual NAMAD recognition ceremony on Tuesday that can be viewed on this website.
CARFAX has done “a significant amount of hiring in recent years,” said the company’s vice president of human resources Adrienne Webster.
"Team CARFAX continues to grow," Webster said in a news release, adding that the company continues to focus on “our unique culture.”
That is one reason the Washington Post recently recognized CARFAX — which describes itself as “the expert in vehicle history since 1984” — as one of the Top Workplaces in the Washington D.C. area.
CARFAX, which says it has been “a staple of the Northern Virginia business community” for more than 30 years, has won the recognition seven years in a row.
CARFAX received recognition in the “large company” category for the first time. CARFAX placed No. 5 on that list.
Webster said the award was “especially meaningful” in the current times because it is based on CARFAX employee feedback.
“We know they value our continued investment in teamwork and a mission-driven culture,” Webster said.
Only 14 companies have been named a Top Workplace seven times since the award began in 2014, and CARFAX said it is among them. CARFAX currently employs 1,006 people, and in 2019, more than 250 new employees joined the company.
CARFAX notes that it operates a database of more than 24 billion records. CARFAX product offerings have expanded over the years to include Used Car Listings and Car Care. CARFAX designed that latter program to help car owners better maintain their vehicles.
The company says “Team CARFAX” outside the office has long supported the annual Bike to the Beach DC program. That program raises money for autism research.
Selection in the Top Workplaces list is based on employee feedback gathered through an anonymous third-party survey.
Research partner Energage LLC administered the survey, which measured workplace culture aspects such as alignment, execution, and connection.
A listing of CARFAX career opportunities is available.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) says the annual Women of Color in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Conference honored four FCA technical business leaders for their career achievements.
The winners were honored in the categories of Technology All-Star Award and Technology Rising Star Award.
The Technology All-Star Award recognizes professionals demonstrating “excellence in the workplace and in their communities.” The winners in that category were Candyce Allen, project chief engineer – body engineering; and Saretta Wallace, process improvement manager – Sterling Heights Assembly Plant.
The Technology Rising Star Award recognizes early career professionals who are “helping to shape technology for the future.” Winners in that category were Laura Fabian Guevara, product engineer – Jeep Grand Cherokee; and Madhuri Ponugoti, powertrain quality data specialist.
FCA team members were recognized at the virtual Women of Color Technology Recognition Luncheon this past Friday.
Lottie Holland, who is FCA North America director, diversity, inclusion, engagement & talent acquisition, said the 2020 Women of Color STEM Awards “celebrate many of the country’s most promising and influential female technical business leaders.”
The Women of Color STEM Conference honors achievements of women in STEM professions. A conference goal is to highlight accomplishments of women in technical fields to ensure the accomplishments are visible to industry professionals, government officials and students.
“FCA is proud that our women technical leaders are regarded consistently among such accomplished professionals,” Holland said in a news release.
FCA said its employees over the years have earned technical professional recognition from diversity organizations such as BEYA. That according to FCA, shows the company’s commitment to developing its diverse workforce.

Along with donating 150,000 masks to three of the largest public school districts in Texas, GM Financial recently named five regional 2019 Auction of the Year winners and the recipient of the Most Valuable Auction of the Year Award.
These accolades are part of GM Financial’s annual nationwide Auction of Excellence program, recognizing the highest-performing auction locations in 2019.
The Regional Auction of the Year winners included:
ADESA Dallas, Hutchins, Texas
ADESA Kansas City, Belton, Mo.
Manheim Denver, Aurora, Colo.
Manheim Pennsylvania, Manheim, Pa.
Manheim Mississippi, Hattiesburg, Miss.
And the Most Valuable Auction of the Year is Manheim Pennsylvania.
“We value our longstanding relationship with GM Financial and are truly honored to be chosen for this award,” said Joey Hughes, vice president and general manager of Manheim Pennsylvania.
“This is a testament to the commitment our team puts in every day to help our clients achieve their goals, while delivering outstanding service. I’m excited to see them recognized in such a meaningful way,” Hughes continued in a news release from GM Financial.
GM Financial said recipients were selected after reviewing each of the consignor’s 45 auctions’ performance in retention, operational metrics, presale activities and overall auction operations.
“These auctions helped GM Financial produce outstanding results throughout the year and provide outstanding service and value for our dealer customers,”GM Financial senior vice president of remarketing solutions Bob Winn said in a news release.
“They perform reliable and key services for our continued success. Congratulations to each one being honored this year,” Winn continued.
Mask donations
In other company news, GM Financial is helping thousands of students, teachers and staff members in San Antonio, Fort Worth and Arlington have a fresh disposable face mask to wear each day at school, by donating 50,000 masks to San Antonio ISD as well as donating 50,000 masks to Fort Worth ISD and another 50,000 to the Arlington ISD.
Being based in Fort Worth, with large operations in both San Antonio and Arlington and nearly 5,000 employees in the metroplex, GM Financial president and chief executive officer Dan Berce said, “GM Financial has a longstanding commitment to supporting the health and welfare of the communities where we live and work.
“With the continued threat of COVID-19, these masks are one way we can contribute to a safe learning and working environment for our local school districts,” Berce continued in a news release.
GM Financial’s mask donations joins a larger effort by its parent company General Motors, which will have donated more than 6 million masks by the end of September.
Overall, GM Financial and GM employ more than 13,000 Texans in facilities across the state, according to the companies.
Leaders from each of the school districts shared reaction to the efforts by GM Financial.
San Antonio ISD chief operations officer Willie Burroughs said: “We are very appreciative of this donation as it helps our staff and students have a clean mask to wear. Wearing face masks is one of the most important safety protocols we’ve put in place to be able to offer classroom learning this fall.”
Arlington ISD superintendent of schools Marcelo Cavazos said: “GM has looked out for the staff and students in the Arlington ISD for years. It’s amazing to have partners like that, especially in times like this. We will be able to put these masks to great use to ensure that our staff and students are safe, which has always been our No. 1 priority.”
Fort Worth ISD superintendent Kent Scribner said: “We believe the best place for a child to learn is in the classroom, with a teacher. And for those learning on campus our overarching priority is the health and safety of students, teachers, staff and the community. GM Financial’s generous donation of 50,000 masks has a major impact on helping us help children and our employees.”

Two well-known names within the used-vehicle space — Mike Stanton and Tim West — each recently were given industry accolades for their service.
West received the Ed Bobit Industry Icon Award, and the National Auto Auction Association named Stanton as its newest Warren Young Fellow.
For West, Black Book’s longtime vice president of North American auctions, his accolade arrived during virtual award ceremonies; first on Wednesday with the International Automotive Remarketers Alliance (IARA) and then a day later with NAAA.
The IARA presentation included executive director Tony Long and current president Paul Seger, who also is vice president of asset remarketing at Element. The NAAA ceremony included chief executive officer Frank Hackett and current president Laura Taylor, who also is general manager of Charleston Auto Auction.
The organizations honored West to highlighted his more than 30-year contributions to the remarketing industry. The award was originally scheduled to be presented at the 2020 CAR Conference.
Remarking on his acceptance, West thanked his Black Book family, who provided him the opportunity to enter the industry 36 years ago.
“I have been so fortunate to work for Black Book for 36 years and utilize the support and resources that they have provided for myself and all of our employees. As a matter of fact, I don’t consider this an individual award at all but one I share with each and every one of our employees,” West said through a news release distributed by Black Book.
West recognized the wonderful industry colleagues he has worked alongside, including auction owners, general managers, and industry executives, whom he has built significant personal and professional relationships with, and his own family, who allowed him to travel freely, often at times, to establish the relationships that have helped to allow Black Book the ability to be recognized as one of the leading brands in our industry.
“I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the unbelievable leadership that I have benefited and learned from. Gene McDonald, Bob Burnett and of course Tom Cross are not only champions for our industry but also for doing the right thing in any situation,” West said.
West, who joined Black Book 36 years ago as an editorial assistant, eventually took on the responsibility for editing the passenger car portion of Black Book’s domestic guides. After several years in that position, West was named assistant field coordinator and worked directly with the survey contractors who attend wholesale auto auctions throughout North America on behalf of Black Book.
West was named vice president at Black Book in 2003. In 2004, he was inducted into the National Independent Automobile Dealers Association Ring of Honor.
NAAA also inducted West into its Hall of Fame in 2011. In 2012 West was designated as a Warren Young Fellow by NAAA in recognition of his many contributions to the industry and association.
And speaking of the Warren Young Fellow program, the newest one is Staton, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the National Automobile Dealers Association.
NAAA, which represents about 350 wholesale auto auctions and more than 140 associate members, gave the award with a $2,500 donation in Stanton's name to NAAA's nonprofit Warren Young Scholastic Foundation. A fellow is a donor at that level, or in whose honor or memory a contribution is made in that amount, to support the scholarship organization.
Since its establishment in 2004, the Scholastic Foundation, named in honor of Warren Young, Sr., a pioneer of the auto auction industry who retired after 35 years of service to his profession and NAAA, has helped 180 students pursue dreams of higher education and raised more than $2.5 million. It awards $52,000 in merit scholarships annually for study at accredited institutions.
Stanton joins an exclusive group of 124 others who have attained the lifetime distinction of being named a Fellow. He received a gold medallion, a framed commemorative certificate and will have his name engraved on a plaque of esteemed Fellows at NAAA headquarters.
“Mike has been a trusted friend and consistent supporter of our association and members for more than a decade,” Taylor said in a news release distributed by NAAA. “He’s attended every NAAA convention since 2006, sponsored the lovely luggage given to our incoming presidents, presented the Hall of Fame ring to the inductees, and was instrumental in helping secure automotive industry analyst Glenn Mercer to prepare NAAA’s Auction of Tomorrow 2027 report.”
She noted that under Stanton’s 11-year leadership of the AuctionNet relationship for NADA/JD Power, NAAA’s share of AuctionNet revenue grew an astounding 231 percent, and the project has generated more than $20 million for the association in this period.
“Also, Mike has helped facilitate the ‘Through the Eyes of the Dealer’ training for the NADA Dealer Academy and assisted with the auto technician recruitment strategy through the NADA Foundation,” Taylor said.
In addition, Stanton has been actively involved in the joint advocacy efforts of NADA and NAAA in Washington, D.C. He continues to offer strong support on federal issues that can impact the members of both organizations and the industry.
Hackett added, “When you need something done on Capitol Hill, it’s nice to know you have Mike Stanton in your corner to get things done.”
Other industry executives to be named a Warren Young Fellow in recent weeks include Mike Browning, who is general manager of Manheim San Antonio and a past NAAA president, as well as Tim Massingale, KAR remarketing services vice president of environmental safety and health, and Mike Roy, vice president of auto auction practice for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services.
The National Auto Auction Association named its two newest Warren Young Fellows on Friday; an honor that recognizes their noteworthy contributions to NAAA's auction safety initiatives.
The latest two wholesale executives to be given this accolade are Tim Massingale, KAR remarketing services vice president of environmental safety and health, and Mike Roy, vice president of auto auction practice for Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services.
NAAA, which represents about 350 wholesale auto auctions and more than 140 associate members, gave the award with a $2,500 donation in each of their names to NAAA's nonprofit Warren Young Scholastic Foundation. A fellow is a donor at that level, or in whose honor or memory a contribution is made in that amount, to support the scholarship organization.
Massingale and Roy join an exclusive group of 122 others who have attained the lifetime distinction of being named a fellow. They each received a gold medallion, a framed commemorative certificate and will have their names engraved on a plaque of esteemed fellows at NAAA headquarters.
NAAA highlighted both Massingale and Roy played important roles in the timely creation and distribution of the NAAA Auction Start-up Playbook in Response to COVID-19 as a resource to help auctions resume operations safely in the post-pandemic world, according to NAAA president Laura Taylor in her presentation.
The 18-page guide, along with a special three-page addendum focused just on disinfecting and deep cleaning, provides checklists, diagrams, plans, and other material for implementing safety protocols that reduce the risk of exposure to infectious disease in the workplace.
Taylor praised the new fellows for their efforts in rolling out the Playbook to “safeguard auction employees, customers, contractors, their families and communities” during the pandemic.
“In addition, Tim and Mike have been involved in promoting greater safety awareness and accident prevention at auctions as active members of NAAA's Safety Committee,” Taylor said. “They’ve made presentations at our safety summits, participated in the Safe T. Sam program, written articles for NAAA’s On The Block magazine and joined many conference calls to keep improving what we're doing to make our auctions a safer place to work and do business.
“Their ongoing dedication and valuable input to achieve that goal is why we recognize them today,” Taylor added.
CARFAX continues to receive accolades for its employment environment.
The vehicle history report provider has been named one of The Washington Post’s 2020 Top Workplaces in the Washington, D.C., area for the seventh consecutive year. CARFAX said this week that the firm is just one of 14 companies to receive the prestigious honor seven times since the award began in 2014, highlighting a culture built around teamwork and dedication to the CARFAX mission.
“The Post’s recognition of CARFAX as a Top Workplace for the seventh straight year confirms our team’s unwavering commitment and passion,” CARFAX president Dick Raines said in a news release. “Team CARFAX has a mission-driven culture that aims to help millions of people confidently shop, buy, service or sell used cars.
“This award is incredibly meaningful because it’s based on the feedback from Team CARFAX. We’ve grown that team significantly in recent years, and it’s critical we continue to invest in it and our unique work environment,” Raines continued.
CARFAX recapped that it has been a staple of the Northern Virginia business community for more than 30 years. Outside the office, Team CARFAX has been a long-time supporter of the annual Bike to the Beach DC program, which raises money for autism research.
This was the first year CARFAX was recognized in the large company category. CARFAX currently has 997 employees as more than 250 new people joined Team CARFAX in 2019 alone.
“Now in its seventh year, The Post’s Top Workplaces list continues to highlight the companies that are leaders in the Washington-area in terms of employee engagement and satisfaction,” said Washington Post Top Workplaces editor Dion Haynes. “We had a record number of employees participate in the survey this year, making it clear that these organizations have made cultivating an atmosphere of support and respect a priority.”
Selection in The Washington Post’s Top Workplaces list is based solely on employee feedback gathered through an anonymous third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, which measured several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection.
The full list along with additional content will run in print in a special Top Workplaces magazine on Oct. 14 and will be available on The Post’s site. The Washington Post will also host an awards ceremony in October to recognize the 200 top-ranked companies.
Openings at CARFAX can be found by visiting www.carfax.com/careers.
