Third-party automotive websites are improving satisfaction by capturing the attention of vehicle shoppers through increased use of the visual Web and its streamlined approach to site navigation, according to the J.D. Power 2016 Third-Party Automotive Website Evaluation Study released on Thursday.
The study, now in its fourth year, measures the usefulness of automotive third-party websites during the new- and used-vehicle shopping process by examining four key measures in order of importance:
— Information and content
— Appearance
— Navigation
— Speed
Satisfaction is measured on a 1,000-point scale.
While the impact of appearance on third-party auto website satisfaction has increased at a steady pace to 24 percent in 2016 from 21 percent in 2013, J.D. Power found there exists a significant 83-point gap in satisfaction between third-party sites and manufacturer sites (742 versus 825, respectively).
Appearance is the highest-scoring measure for auto manufacturer sites and second lowest for third-party sites, according to the study.
“The common bond among top-performing third-party auto sites is a heavy reliance on the ‘visual Web,’ with its very streamlined, easy-to-use site navigation features,” said Arianne Walker, senior director of marketing analytics at J.D. Power.
“Expectations continue to increase not only because auto manufacturers have such visually stimulating sites but because websites in many categories have focused on enhancing visual aesthetics and easy navigation,” Walker continued. “If third-party sites want to maintain and increase their usage among shoppers, they need to consider the impact appearance has on satisfaction and continually work to improve the look and feel of the website to keep up with the ever changing expectations of shoppers.”
J.D. Power highlighted a trio of other key findings of the 2016 study, including
1. Visual Web influences site preference
The study found that the highest-scoring third-party auto websites employ heavy use of visual Web design elements such as edge-to-edge imagery, cleaner spacing and aesthetically pleasing call-to-action colors.
2. Expert reviews must cover the basics
J.D. Power said content is king when it comes to satisfying shoppers on third-party sites, which includes ratings and reviews. Shoppers told J.D. Power the most important content to cover in an expert review is safety (38 percent), performance (24 percent) and functionality (11 percent).
3. Satisfaction drives loyalty and advocacy
The study determined that 83 percent of highly satisfied shoppers (overall satisfaction scores of 901 or higher) using third-party websites say they “definitely will” return to the website in the future, and 81 percent say they “definitely will” recommend the site, while only 3 percent of displeased shoppers (scores of 500 or less) say they “definitely will” return and only 2 perent say they “definitely will” recommend.
Study rankings
In 2016, overall satisfaction with automotive third-party websites averaged 751. TrueCar ranked highest at 795, followed by Carfax (793) and Cars.com (775).
The 2016 Third-Party Automotive Website Evaluation Study is based on evaluations from more than 5,000 new- and used-vehicle shoppers who indicate they will be in the market for a vehicle within the next 24 months. The study was fielded in January.
Websites evaluated in the study were selected based on meeting the following criteria:
— Must be an automotive third-party site
— Have the ability for consumers to shop for both new and used vehicles
— Be among the most frequently visited sites based on behavioral data.

“The range of high-quality products re-entering the market as pre-owned vehicles grows ever more impressive year by year as automakers are paying more attention to small details that help preserve the resale value of a vehicle,” Jim Nguyen, TrueCar executive vice president and general manager of ALG, said in a news release.
“This award is designed to identify used vehicles that will hold the highest percentage of their value over the next three years,” he said. “For potential used-car buyers, unlocking value is an important part of the purchase consideration, and as certified pre-owned programs expand, consumers will benefit from the improved quality and reliability offered as a result of these refinements.”
TrueCar said the strong CPO program at Infiniti, which includes transferable warranty coverage, help nudge it above other premium brands. On the mainstream side, Toyota was by the far the biggest highlight, taking seven segment awards and the overall mainstream brand honors.
Earning three segment wins apiece were Ford and Hyundai.
TrueCar said it closely analyzes used-vehicle performance, brand outlook and product competitiveness to determine the award winners. In order to be eligible to win the brand award, automakers must have model entries in four or more different segments.
In its news release, TrueCar adds: “To account for differences across trim levels, model averages are weighted based on percentage share relative to the entire model line.”
Background & process behind POVA
Auto Remarketing caught up with Eric Lyman by phone on Friday to discuss the awards. Lyman is vice president of industry insights for TrueCar and ALG.
If you think about the process behind determining the ALG’s Residual Value Awards on the new-car side, the process to determine the Pre-Owned Value Award is “basically identical,” he said, except that it’s for 2-year-old vehicles and is based on expected retention of current used-car value.
Here’s how it works: TrueCar takes the current used value of 2-year-old vehicles (so, model-year 2014 units) and gauges how much of that value they will retain over the next three years – i.e., how much of that current value will they have left in 2019.
Lyman said TrueCar picked 2-year-old cars as a starting point because 2014 is “the model that is most representative of vehicles sold in manufacturer CPO programs in 2016.”
When the idea of a pre-owned value award came up, Lyman said, the TrueCar team was excited.
Consider the used-car shopper: here you have consumers that, largely, are already value-oriented, he said.
“The value proposition is very strong in their mind,” Lyman said.
And this award aligns with that, as it shows which of the 2-year-old cars are going to hold their value the best and represent the “best return on investment.”
The awards tackle two trends in the market, Lyman said. On the consumer-facing side, TrueCar is aiming to give shoppers “more direction” when it comes to pre-owned.
Then from the industry side, TrueCar is looking at the strategies automakers are using to deal with increases in used supply, including certified pre-owned, which Lyman said “will be more important than ever.”
He went on to explain correlation between CPO strength and new-car transaction prices. Certified pre-owned supports brand perception and used-car values, which can in turn drive new-car transaction prices.

FORTUNE magazine recently released its 100 Best Companies to Work For and, as usual, several companies involved in the automotive industry made the list.
These companies include the likes of ARI, Capital One Financial, CarMax, Credit Acceptance, JM Family Enterprises, and USAA.
CarMax celebrates its 12th consecutive year on the list.
“Our associates take pride in maintaining the strong CarMax culture of transparency, respect and integrity,” said Tom Folliard, CarMax’s chief executive officer. “By investing in our associates, we are equipping them to provide the exceptional experience our customers deserve.”
Companies that are included in the listing are ranked by FORTUNE based on its extensive employee surveys, which are given to a random sample of employees from each company. The survey asks employees about their attitudes about management’s credibility, overall job satisfaction and camaraderie.
Companies are also judged based on their pay and benefits programs and a series of open-ended questions about their hiring practices, methods of internal communication, training, recognition programs and diversity efforts.
ARI, a global fleet services provider, was acknowledged on the list for the fourth year in a row.
“We are incredibly honored to be named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for a fourth consecutive year,” said Chris Conroy, ARI’s president. “Being named to the list year after year is entirely due to our people, who are not only the best at what they do when it comes to fleet management, but also go the extra mile when it comes to their colleagues, offering support when it is needed, celebrating successes when they happen and pitching in to overcome any challenges that come along. It is that atmosphere of teamwork, cooperation, understanding and support that makes ARI such a special place to work.”

Speaking of the best places to work, do you work at an auction and think it’s one of the best? Designed and intended for individual auction locations, this free workplace study conducted by Auto Remarketing and Best Companies Group is currently working to compile the Best Auto Auctions to Work For.
For individual auction locations to participate, the general manager/leader of that auction needs to opt in at this website by April 22: www.bestautoauctionstoworkfor.com.

Edmunds.com named over 800 car dealerships as recipients of its fourth-annual Five Star Dealer Awards on Tuesday.
According to the company, the awards recognize the car dealers that earned the highest overall rating for customer satisfaction in Edmunds.com’s dealer “sales ratings.”
"Providing excellent customer satisfaction has never been more important than it is in today's highly connected world," said Avi Steinlauf, Edmunds.com’s chief executive officer. "Congratulations to all of the winners of the Edmunds Five Star Dealer Awards for recognizing that putting the customer first is the very best way to be successful."
To be eligible for the honor, the dealer partners must have earned an overall sales rating of five stars, generated by car shoppers, on Edmunds.com. Further requirements include at least 20 reviews during the previous two years, as of December 31.
The winning dealerships are distinguished on Edmunds.com by a Five Star Dealer badge. Dealers interested in joining Edmunds.com’s dealer partner program can do so via its Dealer Center here.
Remarketing of America announced the recipient of its second annual national auction of the year honor, known as the ROA BlueAward.
Based on a ranking of auctions in several key performance areas, this year’s ROA BlueAward winner is Manheim New Mexico.
“We are pleased to present the Manheim New Mexico auction house with the ROA BlueAward, national auction of the year winner, for their consistent hard work and dedication throughout 2015, setting them apart from the other auctions throughout the nation,” said Emory White, ROA’s president and chief executive officer. “The Manheim New Mexico team, led by general manager Owen Stephens, has demonstrated outstanding customer service and an amazing work ethic that can be modeled after in the industry.
“The ROA BlueAward program is our way of recognizing our outstanding auction partners who play an invaluable role in the successful remarketing of vehicles helping to ensure great returns for our financial services’ clients,” White continued.
According to ROA, the award provides auctions with valuable feedback in the following five critical areas of service:
- Percentage of sell price compared to MMR
- Time (days) to pick up
- Time (days) to prepare condition report
- Number of arbitrations
- Time (days) to release funds from sold units
Each auction receives a scorecard every quarter that quantifies their service levels and shows how they compare with competitive auctions in their region. ROA announces the top auction from each region quarterly and ad the end of the year names the auction with the highest average score from all four quarters as its national auction of the year.

DealerRater highlighted the winners of its annual Dealer of the Year Award program on Wednesday.
The dealer review website recognized recipients for distinction in outstanding customer service based upon consumer reviews of dealership experiences shared on DealerRater.com and DealerRater.ca.
The highest scoring dealership in the United States was Galpin Honda in Mission Hills, Calif., earning a 4.942 out of 5.0 PowerScore with 842 reviews in 2015.
The highest scoring dealership in the Canada was Lakewood Chevrolet in Edmonton, Alberta, earning a 4.946 out of 5.0 PowerScore with 267 reviews in 2015.
To qualify for the Dealer of the Year awards, franchised and independent dealers must have had at least 25 new reviews written on DealerRater.com during 2015 and averaged a minimum of a four out of five-star rating. Winners selected to receive the distinction scored the highest within their brand categories nationwide for U.S. and Canada.
DealerRater’s Dealer of the Year awards are given annually to the top U.S. and Canadian car dealers based on a Bayesian algorithm it calls PowerScore, which considers the dealership’s average DealerRater star-rating as well as the total number of reviews written about the dealership during the calendar year. Categories for scoring include customer service, quality of work, friendliness, pricing and overall experience.
“The Dealer of the Year Awards are a distinction that a small percentage of dealers get, and being named as one of the winners is an excellent way to alert customers that your dealership is highly regarded for its customer experience,” DealerRater chief executive officer Gary Tucker said.
“DealerRater makes it easy for online shoppers to find quality dealerships, and even choose the sales or service employee they’d like to work with, before setting foot into a showroom or service bay. Today’s winners will find a badge in their Dealer Panel that allows them to showcase their exemplary customer service,” Tucker went on to say.
