There was a 15.4% year-over-year spike in the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index in October, continuing a string of wholesale price growth from 2019.
Prices were up 0.47% from September on a mix-, mileage- and seasonally adjusted basis, bringing the index to 161.9.
“The non-seasonally adjusted monthly change was -1.9%, which was more in line with what we have been seeing in weekly price trends,” analysts said in the report accompanying the index.
“The difference between the price metrics is primarily a result of the seasonal adjustment, which expects a larger decline in October,” they added. “For example, across the full history of the Manheim Index, October has averaged a 2.1% monthly decline in the NSA price. Indeed, last year the decline was 2.7%.
While lower than the all-time record set in August (163.7), October’s reading did surpass June (149.3) and July (158.0) readings, which were records at the time.
With the total average price gain at 15.4%, pickup prices showed substantial growth, climbing 28.2%. Luxury car prices were up 18.6%, SUV/CUV values climbed 12.9% and midsize cars were up 5.7%.
There was a 5.5% uptick for compact cars and a 5.4% hike for vans.
“On a year-over-year basis, all major market segments saw seasonally adjusted price increases in October. Luxury cars and pickup trucks outperformed the overall market, while most other major segments underperformed the overall market,” the company indicated.
During Wednesday’s quarterly Manheim Used Vehicle Value index call with the industry, Cox Automotive chief economist Jonathan Smoke began his opening comments with this update.
"On this call, we find the industry and used-vehicle values having performed very strongly in the last quarter, but September marked an important change," Smoke said.
For one, that change involved the end of a months-long string of used-car pricing records.
Though still up substantially year-over-year, the record streak in wholesale vehicle prices has stopped at three months, according to analysis around the latest index.
Wholesale prices last month were down 1.58% from August, the first sequential decline in four months, says parent company Cox Automotive.
The resulting Manheim index was still up 15.2% year-over-year at a lofty 161.2, but failed to reach the record levels set in August, July and June.
“After three consecutive months of record-setting price gains this spring and summer, used-vehicle wholesale prices cooled slightly in September,” Smoke said in the analysis.
“Higher wholesale prices were supported by strong retail demand and below-normal levels of supply that eased in September as seasonal demand normalized and supply increased modestly,” Smoke said.
By segment, pickup prices showed the most year-over-year growth in September, climbing 25.9%, followed by luxury cars, with 17.5% growth.
SUV/CUV prices were up 11.9%, followed by midsize cars (up 7.1%) and compact cars (up 5.2%). Van prices were up 0.8%.
The Cox Automotive call discussed how used-vehicle values are seasonally strong, as their year-over-years comparisons are higher than usual.
They're also beating the typical relationship trendline against new-car prices.
"It is clear that there has been a material step-change in used-vehicle values, whether you look at it from a pure price trend or when we gauge used values against new,” Smoke said during the call. “It will be important going forward to assess at any point, this might imply a correction could happen when the imbalance is no longer so heavily weighted toward demand.
"The near-term suggests that we're not seeing evidence of any correction at play now. Supply remains tight and demand remains strong, despite some softening. Neither are likely to change dramatically over the next three months, and as we'll share later, spring 2021 looks very favorable for values.”
