DETROIT -

Chevrolet announced late last week it will continue to celebrate in preparation of its 100th birthday — Nov. 3 — by sponsoring this year’s Woodward Dream Cruise, one of the world’s largest automotive events held on Detroit’s Woodward Avenue.

The event, which will help highlight Chevy’s centennial, is scheduled for Aug. 20, and the automaker has planned numerous attractions leading up to Saturday’s celebration.

Wednesday, Aug. 17

Starting Wednesday, General Motors will kick off the celebration with a design car show. Officials noted the GM design team will host the show from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Northwood Plaza on the southwest corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road. It will feature members of the design team’s personal vehicles, as well as live musical performances.

Thursday, Aug. 18

On Thursday, Chevy will role out its Centennial Woodward Parade, starting at 2 p.m. The parade will feature 50 Chevrolet Volts, 20 employee-owned Chevrolet heritage vehicles, the new Camaro ZL1 and Chevrolet Sonic and vehicles from the GM Heritage Collection, according to the company. The parade is set to start on Woodward Avenue at Long Lake Road and travels south to I-696.

Also planned for Thursday is a performance division and performance parts display open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Memorial Park on the northeast corner of Woodward Avenue and 13 Mile Road.

Company officials noted the display will include a collection of classic engines and modern crate engines, and visitors will also be able to watch professional engine builders from the GM Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., disassemble and reassemble a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 engine.

Additionally, the E-ROD emission-compliant 1955 Chevy Bel Air hot rod will be featured, along with other concept, classic and current hot rods.

Friday, Aug. 19

Moving on to Friday, radio station WWJ Newsradio 950 will host Camaro chief engineer Al Oppenheiser, who will participate in its Motown Muscle breakfast and panel discussion from 8:15 to 9:30 a.m. at Duggan’s Irish Pub in Royal Oak, where the new Camaro ZL1 will be on display.

Jeff Gilbert and John McElroy will host the panel, which will also include representatives from Ford and Chrysler.

The performance division and performance parts display at Memorial Park will also be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 20

Finally, Chevy will celebrate the day of the Woodward Cruise with activities in the Birmingham Triangle District, starting at 8 a.m. and running through the close of the Cruise, at 9 p.m. Over 60 cars will be on display, ranging from heritage vehicles to the new Volt, Sonic, Cruze Eco and Camaro ZL1, noted officials.

Additionally, vehicles from the Transformers movies and a selection of Indy 500 pace vehicles will also be on display.

Visitors will also be able to capture themselves with a Time Splice 3D camera, and Guy Fieri, host of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, is bringing two of his personal Camaros and will be signing posters from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Chevy will also put on the Detroit-area Chevrolet Dealers Parade, running from 8 Mile Road to Pontiac, then back to 16 Mile Road, starting at 9 a.m.

The company will also be setting up pit stops in three locations on Woodward Avenue, open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., where “cruisers can stop in an air conditioned area and have their classic cars photographed in front of murals depicting three historic diners,” noted company officials.

Visitors will also be able to enter a contest with WOMC radio to win prizes for the best classic Chevy photos and best overall car photos.

Pit-stop locations are:

Lastly, the performance division and performance parts display will be open again on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

It was also noted that this year is the first of a three-year sponsorship agreement between Chevy and the Woodward Dream Cruise.

“Chevrolet has always had a strong presence as part of the Woodward Dream Cruise, and we’re honored to have them become the presenting sponsor of the event,” said Greg Rassel, president of the Woodward Dream Cruise.

“We are looking forward to what lies ahead for the Dream Cruise, as this partnership will help the growth of our event over the next several years,” he concluded.
