Overall used-car retail sales were up slightly more than 5 percent year-over-year in the third quarter, with franchised dealers, in particular, increasing sales by 2.37 percent, according to a report from Edmunds.

But certified pre-owned sales in Q3 dipped modestly (1.20 percent) from the year-ago period.

These were just some of the data points shared in the latest Used Car Report released earlier this month by Edmunds.

Overall, there were 10.22 million used vehicles sold during Q3, marking the third straight quarter of used sales of more than 10 million units. A year ago, there were 9.73 million used sales in Q3.

Franchised dealers moved 2.98 million used vehicles for the quarter, compared to 2.91 million in the third quarter of 2017.

Edmunds said much of that came from off-lease volume gains, which helped counteract a 20,000 unit-dip in supply of trade-in volumes.

Meanwhile, CPO sales of 670,796 were down from 678,960 units sold a year earlier.

Late last month, Edmunds was predicting 3.3 million used-car sales for October, which was the same figure reached in September, based on its data set. The resulting used-car SAAR for October was projected at 39.6 million – also on track with September’s reading, according to Edmunds data.

In its Industry Update released Friday, Cox Automotive said there was an estimated year-over-year increase of 0.3 percent in used-car sales last month, with the annualized pace of used-vehicle sales staying 1 percent ahead of year-ago results.

Cox estimated a 38.1 million-unit seasonally adjusted annualized rate for used-car sales in October, which it said was down just a bit from October 2017.
