RALEIGH, N.C. -

Carvana is opening a car-vending machine in Raleigh, N.C., on Wednesday, its first on the East Coast and sixth overall.

The five-story glass facility holds 18 cars and arrives less than two years after the online retailer began free delivery in the North Carolina capital.

Carvana’s other vending machines are in Austin, Texas, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Tenn., and San Antonio.

“If you’ve driven through Raleigh, lately, you’ve likely seen the vending machine taking shape and wondered what it was. The wait is over and we look forward to welcoming customers at North Carolina’s very first Car Vending Machine,” Carvana chief executive officer Ernie Garcia said in a news release.

“We’re making car buying fun again by giving customers an easy, quick alternative to the traditional dealership,” Garcia said.

Customers in the Raleigh area can either have their Carvana purchase delivered as soon as the next day for free or pick it up at the vending machine.

Carvana will subsidize up to $200 for airfare and arrange transportation from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport for those living outside Raleigh delivery area who want to fly to RDU and pick up the vehicle at the vending machine.

Auto Remarketing, which is based in nearby Cary, will be visiting the vending machine Wednesday. Stay tuned for more.
