TORRANCE, Calif. -

American Honda Motor Co. said Thursday it has enhanced the certified pre-owned vehicle programs for both the Honda and Acura brands, including upgrades that include new CPO benefits and stronger warranties as well as a new name and tiers for the Honda brand’s CPO offering.

The enhancements arrive amid year-to-date certified sales gains for Acura (up 10%) and Honda (up 9%) that are ahead of the industry average (2%), according to the company.

That includes the Honda brand reaching its best-ever CPO month, which occurred in May.

Here’s how the upgrades for the CPO programs shake out by brand:

Honda upgrades

The program will now include two tiers: HondaTrue Certified and the HondaTrue Certified+.

HondaTrue Certified benefits are attached to cars from 2014 or later that are over 12 months or 12,000 miles from their respective original in-service dates, while HondaTrue Certified+ benefits are applicable to cars from 2018 or newer that are less than 12 months or 12,000 miles from original in-service date.

There is a seven-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty for both tiers, which is consistent with the previous program.

For HondaTrue Certified, there is an additional 12-month/12,000-mile non-powertrain warranty, also consistent with the prior program.

For HondaTrue Certified+, the additional non-powertrain warranty is 24 months/50,000 miles, which is up from the prior program’s coverage of 12 months/12,000 miles.

Among the upgrades, both tiers will now also include two complimentary oil changes for customers within 12 months or 12,000 miles from date of CPO sales, whichever arrives first.

Other additions include the following, which are available during the limited warranty non-powertrain coverage time: emergency roadside assistance, towing to local Honda dealer, flat-tire change and a spare, battery boost, emergency fuel delivery, lockout assistance, winch service, trip-interruption expense reimbursement, concierge service and 24-hour Honda dealer locator service.

Acura upgrades

Within the Acura CPO program, the non-powertrain coverage (which starts when the new vehicle limited warranty ends) previously was 12 months or an additional 12,000 miles. Now it is 24 months or whenever the total odometer miles reaching 100,000 miles, whichever of these occurs first. The powertain coverage remains at seven years or 100,000 odometer miles, whichever occurs first.

The upgrades to the Acura program also include the first scheduled maintenance for free plus a three-month trial of the AcuraLink cloud-based, connected service system.

That complimentary first scheduled maintenance includes oil and filter, tire rotation, air intake filter, cabin air filter, rear differential fluid and brake fluid.
