PARSIPPANY, N.J. -

As it turns out, “Planes, Trains & Automobiles” is not just the name of a fantastic John Hughes movie.

It may very well describe the “multi-modal approach” folks are taking to meet their travel needs, particularly when it comes to last-mile transportation.

And in the mobility space, a new partnership announced last week aims to help consumers using at least two of those modalities in their travels.

Avis Budget Group has teamed up with the privately owned and operated Brightline inter-city passenger rail service that connects the Florida cities of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Through this partnership, Avis Budget will have Avis cars and Zipcar car-sharing vehicles ready at the Brightline three stations for commuters to use.

The Brightline mobile app and online booking channel will also integrate Avis so that travelers on the rail service can book Avis or Zipcar vehicles. Or, travelers can use the respective websites/mobile apps of Avis and Zipcar to book their vehicles.

“Increasingly, travelers are taking a multi-modal approach to getting from Point A to Point B and our partnership with Brightline offers a new level of convenience and access for people who need mobility solutions beyond the train station,” Joe Ferraro, president of the Americas at Avis Budget, said in a news release.

“Now, riders can benefit from both the speed and service of the Brightline experience, as well as the ability to get exactly where they need to be with one of our cars,” he said.

Added Brightline chief commercial officer Ravneet Bhandari, “Brightline is about connectivity and ensuring our guests can easily move throughout the tri-county region and connect to the things that matter

“The partnership with Avis Budget Group was an easy decision for us as it provides another option for our guests to seamlessly connect from the passenger rail system to their final destinations.”

The three Brightline locations in Florida have temporary Avis facilities, which are slated to move to permanent locations by year’s end. Additionally, at each location, there are Zipcar vehicles available inside Brightline garages next to the stations.
