MIAMI -

Miami tourists and residents interested in an alternative to renting from a traditional car rental service can now connect to the developing Getaround carsharing platform.

The provider of patented proprietary technology that lets drivers locate and unlock the vehicles of people in their city without having to interact with them has added Miami to its roster of markets, the company announced Thursday.

This growth comes on the heels of Getaround announcing that it has secured $300 million dollars of funding from a recent Series D financing round earlier this month.

In a news release, Getaround general manager Nick Chong, who oversees the Miami market and is a native of the city, said that the platform can help relieve local traffic congestion by increasing the number of shared vehicles on the road and cutting down on overall numbers.

“As a long-time Miami local, I’ve been thrilled to have watched the city boom,” said Chong. “With growth comes more people, more visitors and more cars on the road, resulting in congestion, traffic and a strain on our local transit system.

“Miami is ripe for a new, sustainable transportation option, and I’m confident Getaround will make an immediate impact on the city's traffic and congestion,” Chong continued.

Along with obtaining office space near Miami, in Coral Gables, Getaround said that it has hired a dozen local employees and partnered with several nearby auto-body shops and regional vendors, as part of the company's latest market launch.

“It’s been our vision to drive change that has global impact, yet also positively affects local communities,” said Sam Zaid, Getaround chief executive officer and co-founder. “Our platform radically disrupts traditional car ownership by empowering those with cars to earn money on an often idle asset, and providing those who choose to live car-free with a hassle-free and convenient way to grab a car when they need one.”

Getaround’s now operates in almost 70 cites nationwide. The company's expansion into Miami succeeds other previous market launches in cities: Boston, New Jersey, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Jose, Calif., and Philadelphia, this year.
