When it comes to vehicle interests — like peoples’ tastes in almost anything — it can vary depending on their age at the time.

Amid a market filled with a plethora of various car types and brands to choose from, CarMax recently gathered insights from its own customers for a study looking into which cars are most popular among each age group.

With an average age of just over 47 years old, the Cadillac brand — followed by Buick at 45.6 years — have the oldest buyers at CarMax. Meanwhile, brands Mazda and Volkswagen have the youngest buyers, each in the neighborhood of 37 years old, according to CarMax data.

Specifically, Mazda was at 36.8, and VW was at 37.4.

Here is a list of the average age of buyers at CarMax among the 22 most popular brands the company sells:

In addition to specific brands, CarMax also took a look into what car types are most popular among different age groups.

Pickup trucks from CarMax have the oldest buyers on average at 43.7 years old, followed by minivans at 42.8 years old and sports car buyers (38.4). 

Meanwhile, sedans and coupes have the youngest (37.4).

CarMax said that its findings are based on year-long data that the company captured from Jan. 1, 2017 through Dec. 31 of last year.
