WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -

The best quarter of all time for the certified pre-owned market was promptly followed by the strongest October ever.

And another record year for CPO sales appears likely.

Autodata Corp. reported Monday afternoon that there were 146,492 certified sales last month, which was a 5-percent year-over-year gain. This resulted in the year-to-date sum moving to 1.53 million CPO sales, which is 5.7 percent ahead of last year’s pace, the firm said.

Two Asian brands, Kia and Subaru, had their best months of all time in October.

Kia, for one, pulled in 2,026 certified sales for the month, which marked an 82.7-percent hike from a year ago. Through 10 months, it has moved 16,046 CPO units for a 112.5-percent gain.

Subaru’s best-ever month included 2,400 CPO sales (up 24.4 percent year-over-year), with year-to-date sales totaling 20,447 (up 3.5 percent).

Asian brands, overall, increased their share of the CPO market to 51.3 percent in October, while the Big 3 commanded 31.5 percent of the market for the month, and Europeans took a 17.2-percent share.

This best-ever October comes after a third quarter where automakers moved 465,905 certified units.

The CPO market is on pace to break last year’s record mark of 1.74 million sales, as year-to-date sales stand only a little more than 200,000 units shy of that figure with two months left to go in 2012.
