WASHINGTON, D.C. -

With this coming June being the only month expected to see used-car prices slide since the beginning of this year, bargains on quality pre-owned vehicles can potentially be hard to find.

In light of used-car prices seeing double-digit gains through May, Kiplinger.com offered those in the market for a used car a lists of 10 vehicles it thinks are some of the best deals out there.

“Bargains in used cars are tougher to find. A dip in new-car sales and leases during the Great Recession means fewer three- and four-year-old used cars are entering the market,” site officials explained.

“Plus, in the wake of the recession, buyers turned to used cars in a big way, tightening supply even more,” they added.

The website’s list of 10 best values in used cars includes five sedans, three crossovers, a wagon and a minivan. And the units range from the domestic 2009 Chevrolet Malibu 1LT to the popular 2008 Subaru Outback 2.5i.

In picking the units for the list, the site noted all the choices received top scores in Kiplinger’s rankings for performance, value and safety, plus got high marks for reliability, as well.

The site also explained why the list is missing more fuel-efficient models, such as the Toyota Prius.

“We didn’t pick super-fuel-efficient models, such as the Toyota Prius, because prices have soared to stratospheric levels,” the site noted.

“If you’re in the market for a small car with high fuel-economy numbers, do the math and see whether a new model is a better value,” they added.

Lastly, the site noted that dealer and private-party prices provide in the list are based on actual transactions reported by Edmunds.com for previously owned vehicles considered to be in "clean" condition and driven an average of 12,000 miles a year.

“We also include the certified used price of each vehicle, based on actual sales,” the site noted, stressing it also included pricing for certified pre-owned versions of the selected units.
