Hertz is known for renting cars, but its future is in sales.

The latest new venture for Hertz Car Sales is a digital retail presence on eBay, one of the world’s largest online automotive marketplaces, which “advances Hertz’s strategy to make retail its primary sales channel,” the company said in a news release.

The company said the dedicated Hertz Car Sales showroom gives shoppers on eBay access to more than 8,000 Hertz Certified vehicle listings, offering “confidence, convenience and value backed by a trusted brand.”

Hertz has been working to expand the reach of its used-vehicle sales operation, which now includes 46 retail locations nationwide. Over the past year-plus, the company has added a “fully online car-buying experience” to its website, partnered with Amazon to make its inventory available on the Amazon Autos platform, and extended its Rent2Buy program to more than 100 U.S. markets.

“Building on our strengthened retail channels and existing partnerships, establishing a presence with eBay is a natural next step,” Hertz executive vice president of global fleet management Chris Berg said. “It gives us access to millions of in-market shoppers on a trusted platform, supports a scalable retail model, reduces our reliance on wholesale channels and puts our near-new, certified inventory in front of more customers than ever before.”

Hertz said it offers the largest selection of single-owner, near-new vehicles in the U.S. used retail market, featuring inventory that is typically one year old or newer and priced “significantly less” than new vehicles, on average.

Vehicles, parts, and accessories make up one eBay’s largest categories, with millions of listings available from pre-owned daily drivers to highly modified, purpose-built vehicles.

All Hertz vehicles will be available through eBay’s Secure Purchase, which includes payment, financing, registration, ownership transfer, transport and Vehicle Purchase Protection of up to $100,000.

“eBay has long been the destination of choice for car shoppers seeking value,” eBay U.S. general manager of vehicles Andreas Wielgoss said. “With Hertz bringing its inventory to eBay, we’re connecting shoppers with a world-class selection of near-new certified vehicles, all backed by eBay’s Secure Purchase which enables a seamless, end-to-end buying experience online.”

Hertz said the eBay deal is another milestone in its retail growth strategy, focused on building a scalable sales model through partnerships to put Hertz Car Sales where car buyers are already shopping. Establishing a presence on reputable third-party marketplaces creates multiple high-quality entry points into the purchase funnel, the company said, increasing retail conversion while expanding the reach of Hertz’s nationwide inventory.

All vehicles listed on eBay are Hertz Certified, selected from the company’s fleet after a 115-point inspection and backed by a 12-month/12,000-mile limited warranty and a 7-day buy-back guarantee.
