A veteran of almost 30 years with Ford is the new leader of the company’s joint venture with its dealers.
Chris Thornton has been named CEO of FordDirect, which serves as a data hub connecting Ford and Lincoln dealers and provides them with exclusive access to digital marketing and advertising products and services.
Thornton succeeds Dean Stoneley, who is moving into a new role as Ford Motor Co.’s executive director for global product marketing.
“I look forward to building on the strong foundation and culture established by Dean and the team,” Thornton said. “My commitment is to continue driving our vision: to be an indispensable partner to Ford dealers, Lincoln retailers and Ford Motor Company by giving them a superior ability to win at retail.”
In a news release, FordDirect said Thornton has been “instrumental in Ford’s digital transformation over the past decade,” supporting the launch of the FordPass app in the U.S. and overseeing the U.S. Digital Enterprise organization with responsibility for Ford’s web properties and online sales experiences.
The company said his previous experience in Ford’s regional offices gives him “a deep understanding” of dealer operations and the importance of collaborative partnerships.

Thornton was promoted from his position as director of retail CX and products in Ford’s customer service division, in which he was responsible for customer-facing initiatives such as the Ford|Lincoln Service Reservation+ online service scheduling program and Ford’s Loyalty Program, FordPass Rewards.
Stoneley has led FordDirect since June 2022, advancing the company’s mission by leading the integration of digital strategy, data and emerging technology, consistent with the customer-focused Ford+ plan.
FordDirect said its dealer satisfaction reached new highs each year under Stoneley’s leadership, as he contributed to “new, innovative uses of the FordDirect data platform and artificial intelligence to benefit dealers.” The company said he helped strengthen dealer performance, build customer engagement across the network and create “stronger working bonds” with Ford Motor Co.
“We extend our sincere gratitude to Dean for his dedicated service and invaluable contributions to FordDirect over the past three-plus years,” said Brian Godfrey, chairman of the FordDirect board of managers. “His vision and commitment have been pivotal in driving our strategic initiatives, and we wish him the very best in his exciting new role at Ford Motor Company, where his expertise will undoubtedly continue to make a significant impact.”
