Gas Prices See Slight Rise; Wholesale Downturn for Fuel Sippers Less Severe

Amid gas prices showing a slight increase, most of the wholesale price segments that NADA Used Car Guide tracks are expected to fall slightly over the course of the current week.
And in light of fuel costs starting to level off after several weeks of declines, the wholesale price downturn for gas sippers is lessening, with larger-sized segments taking the biggest fall.
In fact, the midsize van segment is expected to fall the most, dropping 2.7 percent of $375 this week, according to NADA UCG analysis. Following closely behind is the luxury utility segment, expected to decline by 2.3 percent.
And as the Energy Information Administration revealed that the average price of regular grade gasoline increased two cents from $3.41 to $3.43 this week, these aren’t the only larger-sized segments that saw substantial decreases.
The midsize utility segment is expected to see declines around 2.2 percent or $375.
Moreover, the two-week average rate of depreciation for the midsize utility segment saw the biggest drop off at 3.1 percent, followed by the midsize van segment at 3.0 percent.
On the other hand, the decline for fuel-efficient segment prices is becoming less severe. The compact car segment is expected to drop 1.5 percent or $150 over the course of the current week, considerably less than in past weeks as gas prices were rapidly falling, lessening demand for these units.
Of course, one segment is bucking this trend altogether. Large pickup trucks are expected to see a slight 0.6 percent bump equating to about a $100 increase, NADA UCG reported. It was the only segment projected to see an increase.
Four- and two-week AuctionNet wholesale average prices are created by collecting all AuctionNet records for vehicles up to five years of age for a specified period of time. Prices are then adjusted for changes in mileage and mix.
Current week prices are based on NADA’s proprietary used-vehicle value model which includes assumptions for new-vehicle prices, used-vehicle supply, gasoline prices, and other economic factors.
