TORONTO -

Two automakers notched their best certified pre-owned sales month ever in Canada, one managed a year-over-year increase of more than 30 percent, while year-to-date totals soared for many.

These are just a few high points of the Canadian CPO sales results rolling in for May.

First up, Audi Canada sold a record 572 certified pre-owned cars, marking its best CPO sales month ever, said Jonathan Breton, the company's manager of certified pre-owned and corporate sales. This number also represents a 32.7-percent increase over the 431 vehicles sold during the same month last year.

With May in the books, Audi has sold 2,082 CPO vehicles year-to-date, which is a 16.8-percent increase when compared to the 1,783 sales during the same period in 2012.

And Audi isn’t the only one who enjoyed their best CPO sales month ever this past May.

Mazda Canada also achieved the same record, selling 556 CPO vehicles in May, up from 359 sold during the during the same period last year.

“This past May was our largest CPO sales month ever for our program. We’ve seen a steady increase in dealer participation over the past few months; resulting in increased vehicle sales and dealer gross profit,” said Brayn Leaitch, manager of certified pre-owned for Mazda Canada.

Next up, Volkswagen dealers sold 1,422 CPO rides this past month in Canada, down slightly from the 1,536 certified vehicles sold during the same period of last year.

That said, May’s total was up slightly from April, when 1,310 CPO vehicles were sold.

“Volkswagen dealers performed extremely well with a 9-percent CPO sales increase over April despite vehicle availability due to fewer lease maturities,” said Luigi Fiorino, manager of used vehicle sales at Volkswagen Canada.

Over at Mercedes-Benz Canada, the company's pre-owned division reported 1,338 vehicles sold in May.  A total of 5,465 Mercedes-Benz pre-owned vehicles have been delivered so far in 2013.

Interestingly, for Japanese automakers, both Toyota Canada and Honda Canada saw their CPO numbers fall slightly on a year-over-year basis, perhaps in part due to tight used supply.

Todd Fowler, manager of used vehicle operations  for Honda Canada, said, “In May, Honda sold 1,888 certified used vehicles, a 13.9 percent  drop, while Acura achieved 279 certified sales, a 21.8 percent drop both compared to last May.

“The good news is, May sales are up over April! From a broader perspective, 2013 continues to present a unique challenge, as the Canadian market is operating under a tight used-vehicle supply, the lowest in more than a decade. However, we have confidence our dealer networks will strive to meet this challenge head-on,” he continued.

Year-to-date, Honda has sold 8,387 CPO vehicles, while Acura has sold 1,303 during the same period.

Over at Toyota Canada, the company sold 2,503 CPO vehicles this past month, down from 2,640 sold last May.

Year-to-date, Toyota has sold 9,718 CPO vehicles in Canada, down from 10,928 sold during the same period of last year.
