Certified pre-owned sales for Asian- and European-brand programs were each down year-over-year in September, but both have managed to continue beating 2012 year-to-date levels by double-digit percentages, according to Autodata Corp.

Asian brands collectively posted 77,897 CPO sales in September, down 3.9 percent year-over-year. Through three quarters, however, their certified numbers are up 11 percent at 789,097 sales.

As for European automakers, they sold 25,300 certified units in September (down 5.8 percent) and moved 264,292 CPO vehicles in three quarters (up 12.1 percent).

And several import brands had stellar months in September, beating both monthly and year-to-date numbers from 2012.

At Mazda, for instance, its September CPO sales increased from 2,811 units to 2,994. Through nine months, Mazda dealers have sold 27,864 certified vehicles, compared to 19,273 in the same period of 2012.

What's more, Mazda sold more certified vehicles in nine months of 2013 than it did in the entirety of 2012, says Roger Basa, Mazda’s manager of CPO and remarketing.

Kia sold 2,917 certified vehicles for the month, a 61.7-percent increase. Through nine months, it has moved 25,112
CPO units this year for a 79.1-percent gain.

Subaru increased its certified sales by 43.7 percent, pulling in 3,011 CPO sales for September. This continues a strong year for the brand, which has moved 26,802 certified units in nine months (up 47.3 percent).

Audi moved 2,982 CPO units last month, up from 2,799 in September 2012. Its certified totals through nine months include 29,070 sales, compared to 27,640 CPO sales in the year-ago time frame.

At Hyundai, September certified sales were down 9.1 percent at 5,927 units sold, but year-to-date sales are still up 10.5 percent with 57,390 transactions reported.

That is a familiar story for many import brands.

The Honda brand’s CPO sales fell 8 percent in September (18,059 units), but nine-month figures (189,458 units) are still ahead 2.7 percent.

In September, Toyota had 26,972 CPO sales, which was down 3.9 percent from September 2012. However, year-to-date sales are up 13.3 percent at 281,019.

Similarly, Lexus was down 2.2 percent in September (5,638 sales) but up 6 percent year-to-date (54,566 sales).

Volkswagen CPO sales dipped 16.2 percent for the month, coming in at 6,163. Year-to-date sales are up 11.8 percent, though, with dealers having moved 72,734 vehicles.

The Nissan’s brand’s 8,367 CPO sales in September were down 15 percent year-over-year, but its year-to-date sales are up 7.1 percent at 86,247.

Mercedes-Benz posted 6,641 certified sales for the month (down 1.1 percent) and 72,824 certified sales for the nine-month period (up 22.3 percent).

BMW had 6,612 certified units leave the lot in September (down 4.1 percent) and 61,304 sales year-to-date (up 8.2 percent).

Mini’s 557 CPO sales were up 64.3 percent from September 2012, and its year-to-date sum (4,984 units) was up 104.6 percent.

Next up, the Infiniti brand sold 863 certified vehicles for the month (up 6.4 percent) and 8,535 units through three quarters (down 6.2 percent).

Acura sold 3,099 certified vehicles for the month (down 15.5 percent) and sold 31,534 CPO units in the year’s first nine months (down 5 percent).

Volvo sold 685 CPO vehicles in September, compared to 996 certified sales in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, sales reached 7,858 units, down from 8,983 CPO sales in nine months of 2012.

Porsche moved 828 CPO units in September and 7,314 certified vehicles in nine months.

Jaguar sold 249 certified vehicles for the month (down 4.6 percent), Land Rover moved 486 (down 10.7 percent) and
Maserati had 32 CPO sales (up 18.5 percent). Mitsubishi was estimated to have sold 50 CPO cars for the month and Bentley was estimated to have sold 30.
