Extra Play in Front Seats Triggers GM to Recall Nearly 19K Full-Size Trucks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said General Motors is recalling nearly 19,000 full-size pickups equipped with manual reclining seatbacks from the 2014 model year.

The agency indicated the recalled units include the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 manufactured from Aug. 1 through Sept. 10.

In the affected trucks — 18,972 units according to NHTSA’s count — either of the front seatbacks may have play. As a result, the agency said these vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 202a, associated with head restraints.

“If the vehicle is struck from behind, the head restraint may not properly protect occupants, increasing the risk of injury,” NHTSA said.

GM told NHTSA the automaker has notified owners. Franchised dealers will inspect the seatback recliner mechanisms and make adjustments, as needed, free of charge.
