Penske’s used-car sales climb 4% in Q2, used revenues up more than 9%

Auto Remarketing continues its reporting on the second quarter used-vehicle results of the six publicly traded dealer groups.
Next up is Penske Automotive Group, where a take-private bid has made headlines in recent days.
But as far as the Q2 numbers are concerned, here’s how the used-car operations of the retailer fared.
Penske moved 59,070 used retail units for the quarter, a 4% increase from Q2 2025. First-half used retail unit sales climbed 1.6% to 119,196.
The gains in used-car retail revenue were even stronger.
Used revenue for Q2 was up 9.4% at $2.47 billion, with first half used retail revenue up 8.4% at $4.9 billion.

Meanwhile, used vehicle gross profit fell 5.2% on the quarter, coming in at $123.8 million, with the first-half tally at $248.6 million, a 3.9% decrease.
Revenue per used car retailed was up 5.2% in Q2 at $41,847, with the first-half figure up 6.6% at $41,420.
Gross profit per used retail unit fell 8.8% at $2,095 in Q2. For the first half, it was down 5.5% at $2,085.
Used retail gross margins were at 5.0% for the quarter, down from 5.8% in Q2 2025. Year-to-date, they’re at 5.1%, compared to 5.7% a year ago.
Used cars represented 33.9% of the retail automotive revenue mix at Penske in the quarter, up from 32.8% in Q2 2025. For the first half, it climbed from 32.8% to 34.4%.
The used-vehicle share of gross profit was 10.7% in Q2, compared to 11.2% a year ago. Year-to-date, it’s at 10.9%, down from 11.2% in the first half of 2025.
Sharing overall commentary in the news release, chair Roger Penske said, “In the second quarter of 2026, our diversified business delivered over 125,000 retail automotive units and more than 5,400 commercial truck units.
“Retail automotive same-store revenue increased 6%. Retail automotive new and used vehicle gross profit per unit remained strong and consistent when compared to the first quarter of 2026, and service and parts gross margin increased by 80 basis points,” Penske said.
“Additionally, I am encouraged with the trends we are experiencing across the commercial truck market from an improved freight environment, driving strong orders of Class 8 trucks.”
