FREDERICK, Md. -

Does the date Aug. 19 mean anything to you? For auction owners, staff, and more, this date marks the launch of the National Auto Auction Week.

National Auto Auction Association president Paul Lips has designated next week to celebrate the auction industry’s rich history and increase the public’s awareness of the industry and its contributions to society.

NAAA is encouraging its members to “use this time to thank your loyal customers, recognize your outstanding employees and renew your commitment to the community with a variety of events and activities.”

And this year’s National Auto Auction Week will also mark the 65th anniversary of NAAA’s founding.

On its website,  the organization has provided celebration materials, such as a logo, campaign kickoff ideas, and more, to help their members get the week started.

The purpose of this week is not only to market auction businesses and thank the communities they are part of, but also a time to consider how much of an impact the auction industry has on the country and the remarketing industry as a whole.

The NAAA  reports that last year its 314 member auctions sold more than 7.9 million vehicles worth $72.7 billion. In addition, the average auto auction employs 140 people and operates a facility of 79 acres.

These very same auctions also donate to their communities on a regular basis, “sponsoring everything from children’s sports to college scholarships,” NAAA officials said.

“This special week celebrates our industry’s seven decades of entrepreneurship, financial success and community service,” said Frank Hackett, chief executive officer of NAAA.

And some other big names in the auction industry have already started promoting their planned events for the upcoming week.

Over at Manheim, the company its North American auctions are participating in the big event and will utilize social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to help spread the word and generate awareness of National Auto Auction Week.

“On behalf of the entire Manheim team, I would like to thank our customers, partners and dedicated employees for their commitment to advance the auction industry,” said Sandy Schwartz, president of Manheim and AutoTrader Group.

“Over the years, NAAA and its members have played a key role on important issues affecting our industry. Member collaboration, advocacy and strong support have reinforced NAAA’s leadership position, while helping to further our work together. I also want to extend my personal congratulations to NAAA on celebrating its 65th anniversary.”

ADESA announced that each of its 67 North American auction locations are showcasing their love of the auction industry in their respective communities in celebration of the event.

“We always look forward to any opportunity to celebrate our incredible industry,” said ADESA president and chief executive officer Tom Caruso, “but this year is especially exciting for all of us at ADESA. Looking forward to NAAA’s convention in September, it will be a pleasure for us to welcome our industry to ADESA’s hometown of Indianapolis.

“And, as a former president of NAAA, I look forward to thanking my good friend and colleague Paul Lips for his year of service as NAAA president and to welcome my fellow Bostonian Jack Neshe as incoming president.”Lips is executive vice president of operations and finance at ADESA, and Neshe is the general manager at ADESA Boston.

The NAAA convention is scheduled for Sept. 3-5.
