SANTA MONICA, Calif. -

Dealers selling new and late-model used midsize cars may have a new selling point at their disposal when talking with moms and dads who visit their lots.

Edmunds.com editors are recommending the midsize car as the most ideal vehicle segment for teenagers.

And after evaluations of every model in the segment, Edmunds has released a list of what it considers to be good fits for these young drivers, selecting new and used models.

“Midsize sedans offer teen drivers the best combination of safety, reliability and affordability,” says Carroll Lachnit, consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com. “Small cars might be more affordable, but they don’t offer as much protection in a collision as larger vehicles.

“And large cars might hold up better in a crash, but they can be difficult to maneuver and could be intimidating for first-time drivers. Some experts think new SUVs with stability control are great choices for teen drivers, but there is far less risk of a rollover in a sedan,” Lachnit added.

So which vehicles made the cut?

According to Edmunds, these are the most ideal auto models for teens:

2009 Honda Accord
2009 Toyota Camry
2010 Chevrolet Malibu
2010 Volkswagen Jetta
2011 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Honda Accord
2012 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Toyota Camry
2012 Volkswagen Jetta
2013 Chevrolet Malibu
