FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -

AutoNation said on Thursday that its January new-vehicle retail sales performance represented a 7-percent rise above the same month last year.

All told, the company’s stores turned 15,966 new models in January.

Breaking down that total, AutoNation indicated the figures for its three operating segments were as follows:

—4,894 units for domestic, up 4 percent versus January 2011.
—8,097 for import, up 9 percent versus January 2011
—2,975 for premium luxury, up 8 percent versus January 2011

AutoNation expects to report February retail new vehicle unit sales on March 2.
